Terms of service
Where a school board has signed an agreement with Litly, that agreement governs. These terms fill the gaps it leaves, and apply in full to everyone else. Read them with the privacy policy.

Who may use Litly#
Litly is provided to schools and school boards, and through them to their staff and students.
A staff member creates a board and becomes its first administrator. Administrators invite other staff by email; each invitation is single-use and expires after fourteen days. Teachers create student accounts from a list of names; Litly assigns each student a username and an initial password, shown once for the teacher to print and distribute. Staff can recover a password by email; students cannot, so a student who loses a password is reset by their teacher.
The board is responsible for the accounts held under it: who holds an administrator role, which staff are invited, and how student credentials are distributed and stored.
Litly does not verify that the person creating a board is authorized to do so on its behalf. Contact Litly if a board has been created without that authority.
The service#
Litly provides the product described on this site: a writing workspace, an AI writing coach, teacher feedback and assessment, class administration, and the records, access-log and safeguarding functions described on the trust pages.
The product changes as features and controls are updated. Boards under agreement are notified before a material change removes functionality that agreement covers.
These terms carry no uptime commitment, service level or support response time. Continuous, uninterrupted service is not guaranteed. Service levels may be included in a board agreement.
Who owns what#
Students own their writing. Teachers own the assignments, rubrics, templates, comments and assessments they author. Litly claims no ownership of either and uses them only to provide the service to the school.
School data is not used to train AI models, is not sold and is not used for marketing.
Litly owns the software.
What the AI is and is not#
The writing coach is an AI assistant. It can produce output that is incorrect, incomplete or unsuitable, and its output is to be reviewed rather than relied on.
It is designed to support the student’s writing process rather than produce the submission, and it does not assign a grade, level or mark. A teacher writes every assessment and decides when it is released. Litly makes no automated decision about a student.
Litly is a tool used in teaching, not a substitute for a teacher’s judgement, and nothing it produces is a professional opinion about a child.
Safeguarding is not a monitoring service#
Litly assesses student writing for indications a child may be at risk and raises concerns to the school’s staff. This is an aid to the school’s own safeguarding duties and not a replacement for them.
The assessment can miss relevant content and it can raise concerns that need no action. Litly does not contact emergency services, does not notify guardians and does not act on a concern. Schools must not rely on Litly as their sole means of identifying students at risk.
Acceptable use#
Litly must not be used to break the law, to harass anyone, to reach another board’s data, to probe or attack the service, or to extract the underlying models. Do not upload malware.
Security researchers acting in good faith are welcome — see the disclosure contact. Good-faith reports are not treated as a breach of these terms.
Availability, suspension and ending#
A school may stop using Litly at any time and take its data with it — how the export works.
Litly may suspend or end access where an account is used to attack the service or harm another person, for a serious or repeated breach of these terms, or, under a signed agreement, for non-payment. Notice to the school and an opportunity to export school data come first, except where immediate suspension is necessary to protect a person or the service.
If Litly is discontinued, boards under agreement receive notice and an export window before deletion. Litly coordinates the export within 30 days of a written request.
Liability#
Litly is provided without warranties beyond those that cannot lawfully be excluded. Litly is not liable for indirect or consequential loss, for lost profits, or for a school’s own decisions taken using the product — including decisions about a child’s safety, which remain the school’s.
Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.

Governing law#
The laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable in it, and the courts of Ontario.
Changes#
The date at the top is the date this text took effect. Changes are published here. Boards under agreement are notified of material changes before they take effect.
