Litly is a writing workspace used by schools. This page explains how it supports students and handles their information. Detailed privacy and security information is available on the trust pages.

What Litly is#

Students draft assignments in Litly with an AI writing coach available for guidance. Teachers set assignments, provide comments and assess the work in the same workspace. The school controls student accounts and records.

What the AI does, and does not do#

The writing coach uses the assignment, rubric and current draft to provide questions and feedback. It is designed to support the student’s writing process, not produce the submission or assign a grade.

Student writing is not used to train AI models. Amazon Web Services provides the model service and does not keep the writing after processing. Litly contains no advertising or behavioural analytics, and school data is not sold. The sub-processor page lists every service provider that handles school data.

Who can read your child’s work#

The student’s class teachers can access their work, as can administrators at their own school and authorized board-level administrators. Administrators at other schools in the board cannot. Other students cannot. Every access is recorded, and the board can produce that history for a child on request.

Requests to access or correct a child’s record should be sent to the school board. Under provincial access and privacy legislation, the board has custody and control of the record.

If your child writes something worrying#

Student writing receives a separate safety assessment for signs of possible harm. A concern is sent to class teachers, is visible to administrators at the student’s school, and follows the board’s escalation settings. School staff decide what action to take; Litly does not contact emergency services or act on a concern.

Concern emails contain the student’s name and the category of concern, not the message itself. The writing coach also directs a student in distress to a trusted adult and provides the board’s crisis contact information where available.

Where the information is kept#

Student records stored by Litly are encrypted and held in Canada.

AI requests may be processed on Amazon servers in Canada or the United States, and are not kept after processing. See data residency.

How long it is kept, and how to have it deleted#

The school board sets how long student work is kept and can have a student’s data deleted. Send deletion requests to the school board. The privacy policy explains the limited records that remain after a deletion.

The emails#

Emails containing student work are sent only after guardian verification and recorded consent. Every message includes an unsubscribe link, and the school can also record an opt-out.
