Accessibility

Litly is designed to support students with a range of writing needs. Product accessibility is assessed against WCAG, which Canadian public-sector accessibility legislation references.

The position#

WCAG 2.0 Level AA is the standard Ontario’s accessibility legislation holds a public-sector website to, and is the floor commonly cited in procurement. WCAG 2.1 Level AA is what Litly is being built to.

The current assessment is partial support. Reflow and assistive-technology verification on the writing page remain in progress. A current accessibility assessment is available on request.

Product measures#

• Colour is never the only signal. The state of a piece of work is carried by weight and by words. The three colours in the product identify whose mark you are looking at inside a draft, and each is paired with a non-colour indicator.
• Links are underlined at rest, not on hover.
• Failures are stated in words. A save that did not complete says so in text rather than by colour alone.
• Automated accessibility checks run in the frontend test suite. Contrast and assistive-technology behaviour require manual verification.

Verification in progress#

Current manual testing covers:

1. Screen reader operation of the rich text editor.
2. Announcement of writing coach responses without moving focus.
3. Keyboard operation of dictation and version history controls.

Results are recorded in the current accessibility assessment and updated as verification is completed.

AODA#

Ontario’s Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act obliges the organisation — the school board — to meet its accessibility requirements. A board procuring software is expected to consider accessibility in that procurement.

Other provinces and the federal Accessible Canada Act impose their own obligations on the organisation. The product position above is the same in each case.

A VPAT or equivalent accessibility assessment can be prepared during procurement.
